When I found out I was pregnant with my oldest son, one of the first things I did was go through all of my household products. I threw out most of them, switched to vinegar and water for most of my everyday cleaning and what I did keep was locked away in a cabinet under the sink. My homemade cleaner was safe and super cheap…perfect! I managed to do pretty well with this method for the first 3 years until I started practicing serious couponing and things started to change. I was able to get all of the household products I loved super cheap or free so it was ok, right? It didn’t matter that I had to cover my mouth and turn the bathroom fan every time I cleaned the bathroom or that the ingredient label and warnings took up the entire bottle. I was killing GERMS! Only chemicals kill those pesky germs, right? I was keeping my family healthy! Well…so I thought.
With that in my head my cabinets filled up with my cheap cleaning supplies rather quickly. I still used my vinegar and water solution for light tasks but was not happy with its performance on greasy areas. So here I am, left in cleaner limbo and a very full, child-locked “chemical closet” filled with harmful chemicals like lye, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid, petroleum distillates, ammonia, sodium hydroxide, butyl cellosolve, phosphoric acid, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, morpholine, phthalates. I knew these chemicals were not good for myself and my family but I felt if I was very careful with limited use, it would be ok. I would later learn through further research that it is best to just not use anything with these chemicals at all, especial for my children. That was enough to start a drastic change.Pin It
When we purchased our home one of the first home improvements we made was ripping out the stinky old carpet from the previous owners so we can install new Pergo throughout the entire house. Laminate floors are super easy to keep clean and are great when you have kids and pets but they can be COLD! I never walk around barefoot and don’t like wearing my outside shoes indoors so I basically live in my slippers.
You can tell the weather is warming up here in NY (not so much today though… brrrrr) because my kids are now begging me to go outside ALL the time. J1 and J2 are very much like mommy, not really into the cold weather. We are more Spring, Summer and Fall folks who tend to hibernate in the winter but as soon as the temp warms up and those winter coats come off my boys are ready for some outdoor play! Last week we had a taste of summer with temps reaching into the mid 70s which got us into the mood for the boys favorite past time….bubbles! Read the rest of this entry »
Bedbugs! The news has been full of reports focusing on infestations found in hotel rooms, movie theaters and many other public places. I am getting kind of itchy just writing this! Fact is, no matter how clean you keep your house, there will always be a chance you might end up with these dreaded pests.
The best way to prevent a widspread problem is to stop the bedbugs before they start. Prevention is key when dealing with bedbugs. Learning how to spot the signs of bed bug infestation in your home is the first step to solving this widespread problem. You can take some steps to prevent them from even entering your home. Bedbugs are notorious hitchhikers so inspect your personal belongings before bringing them into your home. Some of the places bedbugs like to hitch a ride on are luggage, handbags, books, clothing, packages, people, and even animals such as dogs and cats. This is the first step but sometimes it is too late.
Often there are no signs of bed bug infestation but in some cases there may be telltale signs of bedbug infestation that are visible to the naked eye. Be on the lookout for some of these signs:
1. Small blood stains on bedding.
2. Black streaks that look like thin lines.
3. Black dried dots that look like grains of sand.
4. Empty bedbug shell casings
5. Egg sacs.
If you see these signs you most likely have an infestation. There are lots of chemical remedies out there but what if there was something that was all natural, chemical free and smelled great? Look no further!! BedbugLogic Protection & Treatment Spray prevents and treats bedbug infestation, eliminating on contact. BedbugLogic Protection & Treatment Spray is non-toxic, eco-friendly, safe for daily use will not leave a harmful residue and can be sprayed anywhere bed bugs could be hiding
Pesticide-laden products that are commonly sold on the market today do not always work as they should because bugs build up a resistance to the pesticide. Similar to viruses, head lice, bed bugs, ticks, and fleas are constantly mutating and adjusting their physiology to survive and thrive in their ever-changing environment. Lice, bed bugs, ticks, and fleas as well as other arthropods never become resistant to nature’s enzymes and natural pest repellants.
I was given a bottle of the BedbugLogic Protection & Treatment Spray to try out and the first thing I noticed was the scent. It smelled fresh and clean (I was given the Thyme scent) and did not have the slightest chemical smell. I sprayed it on my mattress as directed and was pleased at how quickly it dried. After a few minutes I was ready to put my sheets on knowing that the spray starts working on contact and can be used as often as needed.

I always appreciate a good, kid-friendly activity website, so when I recently learned about the Play-Doh Play-Date activity site, I looked forward to sharing it with my readers.
Today, while my youngest (who is two and alternately considers Play-Doh a source of ammunition and food) was napping, my oldest son, my husband and I shared a play-doh playdate!
I am an admitted gadget junkie. I can spend hours gleefully walking around Bed, Bath and Beyond checking out the masses of stainless steel and brightly colored plastic, all promising to make my life easier and turn me into a gourmet chef! Most of the time, new gadgets do not deliver their promises but I have to say, once in a while, something will come along that really wows me. Meet the Soda Stream!
At first glance, the SodaStream did not jump out at me as a product I had to have. My grandfather used to make homemade soda for us when I was a kid and it always seemed messy and frankly, did not taste great to me. I liked the idea of not having to lug home heavy soda bottles every time my husband’s beloved Diet Dr. Pepper hit the .50¢ a liter mark (my frugal stock up price). Do you know how incredibly heavy and bulky 10 bottles of soda is to handle when you have a full cart of groceries and a toddler (or two?) It is not a pretty sight. Not to mention trying to store all those bottles and the hassle of bringing those bulky bottles back to recycle. I had high hopes for this review and when Mr. UPS came I admit, I was very excited!
