School has just ended and here I am sitting here, late at night, thinking about all the items I will need for my son in September when he starts kindergarten. You see, I am a planner and what makes this fact even harder is that I am a frugal planner. This might take some extra time on my part but it has paid off big time for my family.
Most of my purchases for my family have been carefully planned out ahead of time so I can save the most amount of money possible. Since it would be very difficult to save a lot of money on every single purchase, I have honed my skills to shop smarter, not harder. The key is to know what to look for, when to shop and to use the resources available for FREE!
I have a ton of tips but will give five I use the most:
1) My first and most favorite tip is to always look for free coupon codes before you dare add anything to your shopping cart or step foot in any store! This is a no brainer. You do not have to shop online to take advantage of coupon codes. Many retailers put out printable coupons to use in their stores online as well.
We love spending almost every summer day down at the beach with the kids. Since I like to be comfortable while I am out, I like to find products that help me enjoy my time out with the kids. Sometimes this means trying out a whole bunch of products (or having alot of mommy friends) to see what works (and what doesn’t)
I try to use as much sun protection as possible to keep us all safe from the suns harmful rays and that means a great sunscreen, swimshirts and nice big umbrella to hang out under. I have gotten our most of our sun accessories down to a science but I still have not be able to successfully keep my umbrella up and with my family! I have used all sorts of gadgets from Walmart and Target but to no avail. My umbrella seems to want to be anywhere but with me! Read the rest of this entry »
When we purchased our home we knew that we needed to update everything. Over the years we have updated all three bathrooms, the bedrooms and the living room. The only rooms left that need help are the kitchen and basement. Since this is our first home (and not our dream home) we have decided that instead of spending a fortune on a brand new kitchen (that we will leave behind when we move), we would make less expensive changes that will update the look of the kitchen without breaking the bank.
My husband has been dying to install under cabinet LED lighting since the first day we stepped foot in the house. He has talked about it, shopped for it and showed me pictures of kitchens glowing with little sparkles of light. I liked the idea but was too overwhelmed with the millions of other little projects that crowded my brain at the time. The lights would come when we were ready to hit the kitchen. It has been 9 years since we moved it and that time is finally here!
I did a bit of research to see if this was something that we could do on our own since we always try to save on our remodeling costs when we can. I found out that you can order under cabinet lighting LED kits that can be custom built at the factory and easily installed by you. My husband likes to do most things himself but I was happy to see that the kits contained all the power supplies and accessories we would need to complete the job. I could even send photos and a description of what I needed and get to talk to a live person if I needed help (not that he will admit to needing help)
In a few weeks, my kitchen will have the soft glow of LED under cabinet lights and my son will not have to stumble around in the dark any longer to get a glass of water. Why did I wait this long?
School is nearly over and it has me thinking about how I will keep two boys entertained all summer on a budget. We have some trips planned and will use our pool but there is always some downtime during the week (and on rainy days) so I like to have some go-to-activities I can use with a bit of planning ahead.
The key to kids happiness (and mommy’s sanity) is to have a plan. My goal is to have 2-3 planned activities with their friends each week, which leaves us with a few free days left over to see where the day takes us. I like to keep the activities during the week cheap or free so we can budget in the expensive activities like fairs, zoos and amusement parks when we are with daddy (he likes to have fun too you know!)
Here’s a list of some of my go-to-activities and resources. You might have to do a little research in your area to customize this list but many of my links are national. Read the rest of my guest post on Label Daddy
