I remember the day I went shopping for my gift registry for my first son like it was yesterday. Prior to that day I had done weeks of research to find the safest items available. It was exhausting but I found it to be a necessary evil. Even with tons of research and recommendations from seasoned moms, I still found myself getting emails from friends containing recall notices on some of those very items. Most of the time it would be something simple like requesting a new small plastic clip to hold a highchair strap in place but other recalls were much scarier. I had signed up with a service that sent weekly emails about recalls but found the site to be cumbersome and too difficult to navigate. So much so I stopped using it.
This has been such a huge concern that a special FREE app called Recalls Plus has been created to be our own personal watchdog. Recalls are tracked using the follwing Federal agencies in the US:
- Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
- Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
These recalls cover everything from cribs and toys to even allergen-related recalls. I found the allergern-related recalls to be the most interesting. There was a recent recall for Café-Tasse (chocolate) because it may contain undeclared traces of milk. For those people that suffer from allergies this can be a huge problem and almost never makes the news. You often hear about the big recalls but the minor ones need to be researched carfully.
Another great feature is the “watchlist”. You can track safety recalls on items or brands you currently own or looking to buy and can base your list on your children’s ages. When I chose Toddler a list of typical items a child that age would use automatically shows up (Car Seat, Crib, Stroller, Toddler Bed etc.) All recalls on your watchlist go straight to your inbox. Want to share a recall you came across? No problem. With one click you can email, share on Facebook or post to Twitter. Easy peasy.
Recalls Plus can currently be used on your iPhone, iPad, Android device and even Facebook! Don’t you just love it when something comes out for free that makes our lives as mom’s a bit easier? Give a try and see how it makes life just a bit easier.
